About Stefán

Stefán Sölvi Pétursson
Date of birth: March 20th 1986
Height: 195cm / 6foot 5inches
Weight: 155kg / 340lbs

I started training in the fall of 2003 and focused on powerlifting at the beginning. With that I wanted to build up base strength before trying strongman which had been my dream since I was a kid watching Jón Páll Sigmarsson.

In 2004 I competed in a few powerlifting competition which did not go very well in the beginning as I had a hard time learning how to use equipment powerlifters tend to use.

In 2005 I started competing in strongman along side my powerlifting training. In august that year I won my first title when I won a local competition in Iceland called Austfjarðatröllið ( East Coast Giant ). Later in the winter I went to Finland with my training partners and friends Benedikt Magnússon and Pétur Bruno, to compete at a powerlifting competition. I lifted a easy 350kg/770lbs deadlift which was a teen world record. My friend Benedikt lifted 440kg/970lbs in the deadlift and that was the heaviest lift ever in that discipline at the time.

In January 2006 I started to focus my training on strongman. That year I won Iceland´s Strongest Viking and East Coast Giant competitions and did my first international strongman comps in Scotland and Ukraine. I then participated in the IFSA World Championships and was very close to making it to the final stage at only 20years of age.

In the first competition of the year 2007 I tore my left bicep tendon and was forced to pull out from the tournament. The injury required surgery and I missed the whole strongman season that year. I focused on recovery and to come back even stronger next year.

After hard training I came back in good shape in 2008. I did alot of competitions in Iceland as well as internationals and kept improving. I won Iceland´s Strongest Man and Iceland´s Strongest Viking was also invited to Scotland to try highland games which I enjoyed very much. Later in the year I was invited for the first time to The World´s Strongest Man competition but only managed 4th positition in my qualifying group and did not make the final.

2009 was good with plenty of competitions abroad. I kept slowly improving and gather experience. Won Iceland´s Strongest Man and Viking and qualified for WSM. But got a very difficult qualifying group in which I got 3rd place in so again missed the final.

The competition season in 2010 was long and hard. Iceland Strongest Man title was defended easily but in the Viking Power Challenge in Norway I tore some muscle fibers in my calf in the first event and had to stop. Because of this I missed Iceland´s Strongest Viking competition. But after recovery I deceided to do next competitions carefully and as training. Focusing on being 100% at the World´s Strongest Man competition. With good help I managed to go to training camp in Lithuania with the strongest strongman athlete of all time, Zydrunas Savickas. Training there went great and I learned alot.... ( Information about placings at 2010 WSM will come after the tv shows have been broadcasted. )
